Mosquitos and flies with all their tiny wings. He hears the difference between them. I try, with ears open to echoes high and far.

Tonight, I'll be seeing cairns in my dreams.
Stacks in the sun and scurrying things: lizards and squirrels.
It is amazing how much noise the fat ones make.

Hoppers: frogs. Bright blue dragonflies and things that scatter: salamanders, black tadpoles.
I reach my hand into water the same temperature as the air and touch two before catching
one tiny soon-to-be. I lift it out of the water for a moment still holding the water with it and feel it squirm between my fingers.
And put it back.

Sand steps. I follow them, where his feet go, as I would in the snow,
as I've done all this past winter in the Columbia River Gorge.
And my prints cover his.
